Doctors at the University of California conducted a study that followed 1,600 participants between the ages of 60 and 70 to find out whether loneliness had a more decisive influence on life expectancy than other aspects of health.

After 6 years of monitoring and research, scientists found that loneliness had a greater impact on older people than they expected. Those who reported having company and meaningful relationships lived longer than those who reported feeling lonely. Loneliness was killing them faster.

According to the study, death can also be caused by negative psychological feelings that lead to deterioration in health. One is loneliness, not so much in the sense that they have no one to talk to, but in the sense that they have no meaningful connection to nurture with those they love and care for deeply.

Put Mom on your schedule, even if it’s too busy. Invite her to have breakfast on Sundays with the children, ask her for advice, let her accompany you shopping. And if you don’t live near your mother, try to visit her more often and make a time to call her and talk about her daily struggles and joys.

And if you live alone, scientists suggest that a home in a retirement community could be the solution. These homes offer more opportunities for you to develop friendships, engage in physical activities, and thrive. So despite what others may say, you would be improving their social life and health.
